Last summer an auditor general's report said the council had a long history of not being properly run and called for restructuring of senior management within six months and immediate steps to restore trust between some members and some senior officers.

Council Leader, Councillor Clive McGregor, now says, "This Authority has a long way to go in meeting the requirements of the Corporate Governance Inspection report. I firmly believe, however, that these new strategic aims provide us with the building blocks for a better Council.

He added, "That's what I want to see, a better Council for the people of Anglesey. As I have stated publicly numerous times - those who continue to immerse themselves in personal and parochial conflicts or petty bickering have no place on this Authority as we work to drive it forward."

Members of the council have now backed a new strategic aim and priorities, which Interim Managing Director, David Bowles, believes will assist in corporate recovery and serve the best interests of the Island and its residents.

The council's new strategic aim will be to 'promote and protect the interest of the Island - locally, regionally and nationally.'

In doing so, the Authority will work towards achieving five strategic priorities, namely:

Enhance the reputation of the Council and Island

Protect and develop the Island's economy

Build and support sustainable communities

Promote healthy, safe and fair communities

Businesslike and affordable services

The council consulted widely on its new priorities during the recent question times sessions, with community engagement and consultation helping to shape them.

Interim Managing Director, David Bowles, explained, "One of the key areas highlighted in the recent Corporate Governance Inspection was the need for the Council to focus much more on its direction and strategic planning."

"Our new strategic aim and priorities will give this Authority a fresh purpose and focus. Business plans will now build on these new strategic priorities as we strive to provide the people of Anglesey with the best possible services and a county council they can be proud of."
