| Cardiff University’s estate is becoming a regular feature on TV screens with the main building featuring in the BBC’s latest major drama series – Sherlock.
More than 120 years after the first publication of the Arthur Conan Doyle books, the BBC has reinvented the famous character for a new audience creating a modern day image of the detective.
The up–to-date adaptation of the popular novels features Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as Dr John Watson.
Several complex scenes were shot in a laboratory in the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences as well as in the corridors and on the staircase of the University’s main building earlier this year, and involved staff from across the university community to help filming run smoothly.
Both The Guardian and Wales Online have reported the increased popularity of South Wales as a filming location with the leading actors of the new TV series, as well as its writers believing Cardiff and South Wales to be among the best places to film Sherlock.
Having film crews on campus is nothing new for the university. It previously featured in a number of films in addition to several award-winning programmes such as Doctor Who, Torchwood and Crash.
The first of the episodes filmed at the University was aired on Sunday 25 July to be followed by two further episodes. |
