| Summer holidays are here and many people have the dilemma of filling their children’s seven weeks of freedom with exciting activities and fun things to do. Wales has some answers.
Get Active
Change4Life encourages families to get out, enjoy the weather and kick-start a healthy lifestyle revolution.
Over 14,500 families have signed up for the plan and special packs full of fun ideas for the summer holidays have been sent to these families. The Change4Life website is full of ideas for entertaining children over the holiday.
Dr Tony Jewell, the Chief Medial Officer for Wales, said: “We are asking families to complete a simple questionnaire that will tell us about their eating and physical activity habits. Parents will then receive a free personalised action plans full of ideas, tips and advice on how to get them and their children doing more physical activity and eating more healthily.
“Once a family has signed up for their unique plan they will be sent more information and advice on a regular basis to help them keep up this healthier lifestyle.”

A bit of Culture
If sport isn’t your idea of relaxing this summer why not visit one of Wales’ castles. With picturesque surroundings and historic grounds the castles provide a welcome break from the stresses and stains of work and school.
Many are holding events this summer. These include, a performance of A Midsummer Nights Dream at St David’s Bishop’s Palace and a brilliant performance of archery and falconry at Cilgerran Castle, at which you will have the opportunity to get up close and personal with the birds of prey there. Lamphey Bishop’s Palace is holding a Welsh Festival; music, dance, crafts and food as well as lessons on cooking the perfect Welsh cake, amongst other fantastic activities on Wednesday 25 August.
The Welsh Assembly Government provide free entry to all Cadw sites for under 16’s and over 60’s allowing the population to make the most of their historic surroundings.
If you have an interest in history you may enjoy exploring some of the many museums in Wales. Since 2001, all National Museums in Wales have been free to visit. Many of these museums have fantastic events on including Music on the Patio at Britain’s leading mining museum, the Big Pit.
Throughout August a variety of great activities for kids are being held at the National Waterfront Museum. From the 3rd to the 8th the Museum is holding a Be a Crane Driver workshop in which children will have the opportunity to dress up as a builder and try lifting, slewing and tracking with a ¼ scale fully operational crane!
As well as this the Museum is holding an Eco Energy Weekend and a Solar Powered Film Making workshop- both events fall on the weekend of 20-22 August.
Whatever you choose to do this summer it needn’t have to break the bank. There’s plenty to keep you from the boredom blues within our own country, whether it be trying a new sport or hitting the beaches around Wales. |
