Top names from the world of women's golf return to West Wales next week to compete for the S4C Wales Ladies Championship of Europe.
Machynys Peninsula Golf and Country Club in Llanelli will host the championship for the third year running between August 16 and 19.
Europe's leading professional lady golfers will be battling it out to take a share of the £350,000 prize fund, the fourth largest on the Ladies European Tour.
Local girl Sarah Jones, who made her professional debut last year at Machynys, will be competing as well as the amateurs Tara Davies and Breanne Loucks, a Curtis Cup player, boosting the Welsh contingent.
Sweden's Linda Wessberg will defend her title, having recently won the French Open in June. However, she will not have any easy ride and will be pitted against a strong Welsh contingent including Becky Brewerton, Eleanor Pilgrim and Becky Morgan all of whom will be aiming to become the first Welsh golfer to take the title.
The season started with Becky Morgan and Becky Brewerton taking Wales to third place in the World Cup. Since then Becky Brewerton and Eleanor Pilgrim have been ranked in Europe's top 10 for the first time with Becky earning her maiden victory at the Ladies English Open last month. At last week's Ricoh Women's British Open, she also gained a coveted top 20 place.
Familiar names who will be adding an international flavour will be Solheim Cup players Gwladys Nocera from France and Denmark's Iben Tinning and previous winners Shani Waugh from Australia and England's Trish Johnson.
Chairman of Ryder Cup Wales 2010, John Jermine, said, "We are delighted to welcome S4C as a major new sponsor and our partnership will be a huge boost to this event and to the Welsh golf in general. Machynys Peninsula, a really enjoyable course that is a true test with spectacular views across Carmarthen Bay, is a marvelous new facility for Carmarthenshire and Wales and hosting this event has helped establish Machynys as a must play course."
Jim Anderson, Chairman and Managing Director of Machynys Peninsula Golf & Country Club, said that hosting the event has significantly raised the profile of the venue.
"We are delighted to be associated again this year with this prestigious event which attracts world class players from across the globe. This is the third year that we have hosted the S4C Wales Ladies Championship of Europe at Machynys and each year it just ges better and better. We receive such positive feedback from the players about the course and the support they've been given by all here at Machynys Peninsula."
Last year's tournament attracted crowds in excess of 11,000 over the four days and received rave reviews from Europe's leading professional lady golfers.
Supported once again by Carmarthenshire County Council, the championship is part of the Ryder Cup Wales Summer of Golf, an annual series of events organised throughout Wales to promote Wales as an international golfing destination. |
