Toughest contest comes to Wales
Xterra, the toughest triathlon in the UK, comes to Neath Port Talbot next Saturday.

Xterra involves 90 events across the world every year involving countries like the US, New Zealand, South Africa, Japan, Italy, Czech Republic, Austria, Germany, Spain and the UK.

The event is a combination of three sports - open water swimming, mountain biking and trail running.

The Afan Forest 50k and 100k Enduro comes to south Wales under the Xterra banner and the route covers sections of the infamous Whites Level and Skyline trails plus other virgin sections of our favourite forest, says the Bike Magic website at http://www.bikemagic.com/.

Both distances begin from the Glyncorrwg visitor centre using a staggered start. The 50km is challenging without you needing to be an uber-skilled mountain biker or possess Olympian levels of stamina.

The 100km is gruelling in the extreme and only the brave of the bike world will complete the course without using the bail out sections to come home early.

The demanding course necessitates bail out options after the 50k mark allowing people to cut short the route at roughly 10k intervals. Three aid stations will provide food, water, energy drink, mechanical assistance and first aid.

"We advise that riders bring good supplies and use the Xterra stations to top up, " says Bike Magic.

Afan Forest Park, a world class mountain biking destination, will host the Xterra Afan Enduro event, the first of a series of events starting on Saturday August 18.

The park, with its challenging combination of trails, is an ideal setting for the 100km race. 100,000 visitors come to the park every year and events like Xterra build on its already established success.

On September 15th the comes to the picturesque Vale of Neath, a unique venue which boasts a lake and forests which offer a superb location for mountain biking, running and swimming events.

Following last year's success, the events will once again be family days out with fun activities and camping available over the weekends.

Derek Vaughan, Leader of Neath Port Talbot Council, said he was pleased that this world class event was returning to Neath Port Talbot.

"This will put Neath Port Talbot on the international stage once again, and athletes from all over the world will have the chance to experience the superb mountain biking and running terrains that the county borough has to offer.

"Attracting large scale events like this fits in well with the council's valleys strategy which includes plans to regenerate its valley communities by maximising their tourism potential and bringing revenue into the local economy."
