Wales to spend billions on better quality of life
Between 2006-07 and 2008-09 the Welsh Assembly Government will invest £4.9 billion across all policy areas - from health and economic development to schools and culture, it was announced today.

Finance Minister, Sue Essex said “As a government, we are investing record sums to build a better Wales and we plan to invest even more in future. This includes substantial programmes of improvement for our hospitals, schools and transport systems. We are also looking carefully at the way we spend money rather than just thinking about what we spend it on.

“This document explains how we are spending the Assembly’s capital resources and how this investment will make a difference. Since devolution we have increased capital investment significantly and reversed the decline of previous decades. In addition to delivering a modern infrastructure we are strengthen our communities, promoting sustainable development and achieving long-term value for money.

"We are equipping others to deliver on our goals. Much of the money will not be spent directly by the Assembly Government but will be committed through local government, the NHS and others.

“The Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority offices which we are using today to launch the Government’s capital investment plans for Wales for the next three years, are a good example of the Assembly Government’s capital investment programme in action. These fine buildings were substantially refurbished with the benefit of significant capital funding support of nearly £1.5 million from the Welsh Assembly Government.

“This programme of investment by the Assembly Government will make a real difference. We are committed to delivering better quality services for the people of Wales and are determined to secure value for money at every opportunity.”
