Newport steams ahead
The Waverley pleasure steamer returned to Newport today with a sailing from the recently re-opened Penmaen Wharf, which is seen as having enormous potential for the city as a tourist attraction which would complement the Transporter Bridge in particular and benefit the city as a whole.

Newport city council has recently funded dredging works to allow the steamer to operate a fuller programme than previous years with the first sailing to Penarth Pier taking place today.

Following an agreement with owner Jonathan Collingbourne, an investment of £100,000 was made to re-open Penmaen Wharf.

Ian McMillan, chairman of the Pleasure Steamers Waverley and Balmoral said:

‘We are delighted to be able to bring the Paddle Steamer Waverley to board passengers at the official opening of the new berth at Newport. The Council have invested in the future of our operation from this town and we have a much increased programme of cruises from Newport this year.

“There are sailings for all to enjoy, on Saturdays during the summer we have short trips to Penarth, ideal for children, days out to Ilfracombe and the chance to enjoy one of our evening showboat cruises. Our ships bring back a great tradition of pleasure cruising to the Bristol Channel each year.”
