Mission to save MS sufferer |
|
An exhibition organiser is on a mission to send a Multiple Sclerosis sufferer to Holland for treatment at a pioneering clinic. Phil Dodd, aged 47, from Wrexham, was diagnosed with primary progressive MS in 2000. The father-of-four needs £15,000 to pay for the stem cell treatment at the private clinic in Rotterdam. According to the Advanced Cell Therapeutics clinic, eight out of 10 MS patients benefit from the controversial treatment. It lasts between three and four hours and consists of two injections of stem cells into the back.
Family and friends have vowed to raise the money to make sure that he gets there. Among them is Chris Edwards, the organiser of the Ideal Home and Lifestyle Exhibition Wales, whoâs known Phil for 30 years. Chris has pledged that 50p from every ticket sold to the next event at Deeside Leisure Centre on Saturday and Sunday, September 30 and October 1, will go towards Philâs fund. She has already organised a sponsored dog walk and is also putting on a fund-raising pub quiz. Phil says that much of the charity work done by Chris goes unrecognised. One of her main efforts is an annual holiday for children with disabilities and life-limiting conditions and their families. Now, sheâs now planning an annual New Year break for them too. But Chrisâs main priority at the moment is making sure that Phil reaches the Rotterdam clinic. Phil said: âI know what sheâs done in this town for a lot of people and she does a good job of hiding the wings on her back. Sheâs an angel. Sheâs got a huge, huge heart. Sheâs fantastic. Sheâs adamant that by hook or by crook, sheâs going to get me to Rotterdam. Iâve known her a long time and if she says sheâs going to do something, she does it.â People who want to contribute to Philâs fund or want more details about the exhibition should contact Chris on 07931 222151. |
